2019 Events

From Sean Salthouse –  I would like to start by thanking David Kelly for being the South Regional Director and I hope that I can fill David’s shoes.  I will try to keep up on all the events and will be taking and sharing photos.  Please come out for our Vero Beach Kaffeekiasch, the third Sunday of every month.  We have a full year coming up, and I’ll be posting events throughout the year. I hope you and your families have a wonderful Holiday and a Happy New Year!

Regarding the December 15 event, it was a great day and a nice turnout.  A very good kaffeeklatsch!  Enjoy the photos.

From David Kelly – Here are photos of the Sebring Classic “Pistons & Props” event and the Sebring HSR Historic Races held on Friday 12/06/19 and Saturday 12/07/19.  There were lots of Porsches competing against classic Mustangs, Cobras, Corvettes, Camaro’s, Lola’s, BMW’s, Ferrari’s, Chevrons, Ginetta’s, and racing prototypes for a great weekend of racing.  Several Porsches were among the top winners with podium finishes in their classes.  Look for our own Scott Kee in the #351 Club Sport as he mixes it up with Ferrari’s and GT3 Cup Cars in the sprint and endurance races.  There was lots of action on the track and many things to see in the Paddock, with essentially something for everyone who is a fan of racing.

And, there was the classic WWII era “Parade of Planes” along the back straight at sunset and into the Grid area for display.  A P-51D Mustang, a Texan T6-G, and Stearman Bi-plane were among several of the aircraft participating in the event.  Race cars and classic airplanes made a great combination for the drivers, pilots, pit crews, and spectators throughout the weekend.

You will find interesting details in some of the photos.  There is everything from a spare engine for the race-winning Audi R8 to the unique piston & flower centerpieces for one of the race teams.  I hope you enjoy the photos.

From Robin Hoffman – What a wonderful evening we had last Saturday night at Eau Gallie Yacht Club celebrating the Holiday Season, being thankful, awarding Autocross Trophies and electing the Space Coast PCA Officers for 2020! Many Thanks to all the sponsors, volunteers and participants who make this club great!

We have a huge collection of toys for Nemours Children’s Hospital and we gave a $6000 donation to HALO – a “No-Kill Animal Shelter in Vero from the proceeds of our calendar project. Thank you to RAY BALDINO for his excellent photography and support of this project.  Porsche of Melbourne was also a huge contributor in the printing of the calendar and all-around support for the year!. Thank you and Seasons Greetings to all!!

From David Kelly – Many thanks to all the volunteers and Space Coast Region Officers who planned, organized, and carried out the very successful 2019 Oktoberfest Concours, BBQ & Swap Meet at F. Burton Smith Park on Saturday, November 2.  A large number of Space Coast Region members and their families, along with the Florida “356 Owners Group,” and members from other PCA Regions, came out to enjoy the festivities and Oktoberfest food, and to see all the great Porsche cars on display. From vintage 356’s to the most modern Porsche models, there was something for everyone to see and to vote for as their candidate for the “People’s Choice Award,” in addition to all the awards given by the judges.  Every car had a story and each owner had worked hard to prepare it for the event, and it showed as the attendees and judges worked their way through the field of entries.  Also, there was a wealth of items on display for sale at the Swap Meet tables, along with great demonstrations from some of our Sponsors and Advertisers.  The food was very special too, as it was served with perfect Oktoberfest fare, including a great apple strudel!  It received compliments all around.

From David Kelly – Here is a link to photos of the Vero Beach Kaffeeklatsch on Sunday, October 13, 2019.  We had a large turn-out of twenty-five Space Coast Region PCA members who enjoyed beautiful weather and an opportunity to check out all the Porsches.  There were many great cars including a silver “race ready” GT2RS, a rare Wimbledon Green America Roadster, a beautiful award-winning red 356 Speedster, a silver Boxster Spyder, and a nice Iris Blue ’86 Carrera on display.  The America Roadster and the Iris Blue ’86 Carrera were fresh from the Heritage Display at Porsche of Melbourne which marked the announcement of Porsche’s new 992 series 911’s.

It was another great time with Porsche people and Porsche cars!  I hope you enjoy the photos.

From David Kelly – Here is a link to photos of the Space Coast Region Members Meeting hosted at Porsche Melbourne on Thursday, September 19, 2019.  It was an opportunity for club members to hear about upcoming activities within the Region, and to provide input and ask questions of our Region officers.  It was also a chance to have some fun and catch up with old friends, and to check out all the new Porsches in the showroom, including a beautiful new Porsche 992 Carrera 4S on display out front.  And, of course, there were all those great varieties of pizza everyone kept going back for while inspecting the new cars.

You’ll see many familiar faces, including our Space Coast Region National PCA Spring Raffle winner, Jack Ohlrich, who took this opportunity to see the new 992 Carrera S firsthand in anticipation of the arrival of his new 992 Carrera S.  You can see a video below of his surprise at winning the National PCA raffle on his third try.

I hope you enjoy the photos.

From Robin Hoffman:  We had a large number of Space Coast PCA members partake in the 64th Annual Porsche Parade – this year in Boca Raton! I hope this album gives you a sense of being there and maybe you will come out to Palm Springs next year to check it out! Thanks to Shay Rowe and Porsche Melbourne we had a welcome party for members of the Space Coast and Citrus Regions. Some of the activities we did were: off-road SUV’s, concours, autocross, gimmick rally, beer tasting, banquet dinners, tech sessions, RC Cars, golf tournament kids activities, and enjoying the company of just under a thousand Porsche enthusiasts from across the country and Canada. This album is a compilation of photos from Parade attendees, the photo team and myself…if you have a picture you want to be included in it please contact me at Contact Us.

Photos – Space Coasters at Porsche Parade 2019 – July 21-27

From David Kelly – Here is a link to photos of the Vero Beach Kaffeeklatsch held on Sunday, July 14, 2019.  Twenty-four Space Coast Region members attended bringing Porsche cars spanning four decades.  You’ll see some beautiful classic and modern 911’s, along with two unique 911 Turbos, some great Boxster, Cayman, and Macan models, and two very nice V-8 powered Porsches.  One member brought a beautiful Audi R8 for everyone to see, and another member brought his adopted “Porsche/VW” GTI to join in the fun.  It was another great Porsche outing, with lots of car stories and lots of fun for everyone.  I hope you enjoy the photos.

From David Kelly – Here is a link to photos of the Vero Beach Kaffeeklatsch on Sunday, June 09, 2019.  Twenty-two members attended bringing a full assortment of Porsche models.  Everything from a pair of beautifully restored 356’s to a late model GT3RS was on display.  One member brought a beautiful McLaren for everyone to see.  It was a great opportunity to check out the cars and catch up with everyone.  Another great gathering!

Vero Beach Kaffeeklatsch – Sunday, June 09, 2019

From David Kelly – It was a good turn-out with twenty PCA members attending the Vero Beach Kaffeeklatsch on Sunday, May 12, 2019, bringing with them a wide array of Porsches for display in the parking lot.  From classic Porsche 911’s to the latest Porsche models, there was something for everyone to see and touch, right down to the smallest detail.  Even the staff of the newly opened Pizza restaurant across the parking lot came out to check out the cars!

A special treat was having Vero Beach resident, Dan Hardee, who currently drives a Porsche GT3 Cup car in the IMSA series, join us with his 2018 Porsche GT2RS.  It is a spectacular track machine in every respect, and Dan was very gracious in showing how the car is set up and in answering everyone’s questions.  It was a pleasure to have him with us at our monthly gathering!  I hope you enjoy the photos.

Vero Beach Kaffeeklatsch – Sunday, May 12, 2019

From David Kelly – Here is a link to photos of the “356 Unlimited” Open House, BBQ & Swap Meet held on Saturday, May 4, 2019.  It was a significant turn-out of Space Coast Region members and their families to see the 356 Unlimited facilities and how these beautiful cars are restored to concours condition.  Many projects were underway and in various stages of restoration.  The skills and capabilities at 356 Unlimited are extensive and they are known for accommodating customers’ wishes, including providing assistance in sourcing suitable cars for complete or partial restoration, according to a customer’s preferences.

In addition to the beautiful cars and facilities on display, a great lunch from “Charlie & Jakes BBQ” was provided for all who attended the Open House.  You can see that the entire event, which was a family outing for most attendees, was much appreciated.  I hope you enjoy the photos.

From David Dowling – “For those in the club who like fast cars and rockets, something a little different.”

Thanks to David for these fantastic launch photos.  Although they are not Porsche specific, these launches are a big part of what makes Space Coast such a unique place to live and to drive our fantastic cars.

From David Kelly – Here is a link to photos of the “Wheels & Keels” Antique & Exotic Car & Boat Show at The Moorings Yacht & Country Club on Saturday, April 13, 2019.  It was a great show featuring classic European and American Marques, modern exotic cars, and modified muscle cars and trucks.  In addition to the judged entries, there was a significant number of cars on display from the Space Coast Region PCA and the Corvette Club of America.  Cars were parked in their respective classes along the golf course greens surrounding the Moorings Club House, where a sumptuous lunch was served for all participants.

In addition to the cars, several classic boats were also featured in the show, and they were open for inspection in the Marina adjacent to the Club House.  Porsche Melbourne was a key sponsor of the event, where all proceeds went to support local charities.

From Tony Whalen – The weather was perfect,  cool in the early morning, warming up during the day.

My first Autocross experience was in October 2018;  my sub-par experience helped to trigger the need for the Club to create an AutoX class for beginners which was given in January 2019 (see the article in this month’s Velocity magazine for details).  For me personally, having completed the Training Class made my 2nd Autox experience tremendously better from just 5 months earlier.   Ken Marshal was my ride-along instructor both times and I’m sure he will vouch for the improvement I made during the training class.

Photos were taken by my neighbor, Randy of “Stephan Randall Photography.”  He is a long time race fan and used to race Motorcycles before his career as a photographer.  Just having the opportunity to be at the AutoX track was a thrill for him.

There was a Boy Scout event at the American Muscle Museum.  After the AutoX, 10 PCA volunteers took turns driving each of the eager Boy Scouts for a lap around the track.

From Jeff Dorman – The 2019 Sebring 12 Hour race weekend was very special.  It was named Super Sebring with the addition of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) 1000 miles endurance race on Friday and the famed 12 Hours of Sebring endure on Saturday.  The Porsche factory team took top honors in the IMSA WeatherTech GTLM class (Porsche GT Team #911), in the WEC GTE PRO class (Porsche GT Team #91) and with the Patrick Dempsey Racing privateer WEC GTE AM #77.  Both factory Porsche teams won with late race passes that were decisive.  Below is a link to a small portion of the 600+ pictures and movies I took on my Canon camera and Pixel XL phone.

We arrived at the 2019 Super Sebring weekend on Thursday with all WeatherTech classes practicing on track.  Next up was the WEC practice session and wandering through both series pits during the Prototype Challenge spec series race.  A WeatherTech evening practice followed at sundown (7:45pm).  Then WEC qualified from 9:30pm to 11:30 that evening.  The WEC classes would race on Friday from 4pm to 12 midnight, or 1000 miles.  A long and fun day for any sports car fan.

Friday was another beautiful day with WeatherTech class qualifications beginning at 9:55am.  After, I attended the autograph sessions and spent my time there with the visiting WEC teams.  You will see the LMP class-winning #8 Gazoo Toyota racing team with Fernando Alonso and the GTE Pro Porsche teams for car #91 (class winner) and #92 and the winning GTE AM Dempsey team.  This was followed by the WEC grid walk before the WEC race. The WEC grid and pit area were located inside of the long back straight, entering off of turn 16.  This was quite unique and required some serious braking during the race, into a 110-degree pit-in entrance left turn.

The WEC race was fantastic with the 36 or so entries providing extremely long stretches of green flag running in excellent racing conditions. There were 2 cautions in the first 6 hours that meant the race would not reach 1000 miles, so it became a timed 8-hour race.  An interesting note, when WEC has a ‘yellow flag’ it is basically a virtual safety car, which means every team must slow immediately to 80km/hour and proceed at that speed until the track goes green.   It’s almost like watching slow-motion racing and you will find a 41second video to confound you and prove it.  Rain, hard rain, came in the last 30 minutes of the race with the winning LPM #8 Toyota taking an off-course excursion along with a few others.  The crucial move for the Porsche GTE PRO Team #91 came when they followed the BWM Team #81 into the pits nose to tail for rain tires, and with the Porsche beating them out for the GTE PRO lead.  They held that lead until the race was red flagged with 10 minutes remaining of the 8-hour time limit.  Another fantastic pair of wins for Porsche (GTE PRO and GTE AM) at Sebring.  The popular Jackie Chan racing team #37 won the LMP2 class.

Check out the WEC race highlights at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2P0PKa45t_E to get a feel for the excitement that WEC brought to Sebring this year.

Saturday’s 12 Hour Race day began drizzly and rainy. The usually packed grid walk was a bit subdued due to the weather. The race started under yellow as the teams came to grip with the wet track. Overall, it was another outstanding race with much drama.  For Porsche fans it was thrilling to watch Nick Tandy (who had qualified 8th in class in Porsche GTLM #911) work his way forward after being a lap down in the first hour, to take the fight to the entire GTLM class and take the lead from Ryan Briscoe in the #67 Ford GT in the final hour and hold it to the checkered flag.  Given the weather, I was content to dash between the PCA tent and our Gurney Terrace seat (with live video feed), so there are not any pictures taken from around the track during the race.  But, you can check out the 12 Hour race highlights at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AC1x0Y1FTec to get a feel for the on-track excitement around all 17 of the Sebring tracks turns.

Among the photos, you will see the PCA Porscheplatz hospitality.  Another great turnout there, great seeing folks from SPC and the other regions.  It was a very popular place early in the race before the rain subsided a bit, and actually throughout the race.  Porsche also had a high-priced hospitality area in the elevated terrace area above the front stretch pits at the Turn 17 end of the Club Sebring building.  My friends and I had Gurney Terrace tickets and many of my pictures and videos were taken from the Gurney terrace, located at the opposite end from Porsche, near Turn 1.  So, I was able to wander down and see how the well connected Porsche customers enjoyed the race.  Not shabby at all!  You will also see a couple of pictures of the driver introductions on Saturday where every driver pretty much had to leave the umbrella behind and face the falling rain and be introduced to the crowd.

On Friday evening IMSA radio kept everyone abreast of the pending space coast rocket launch from KSC, which we could actually see from the track. There is a short 25 second video of the rocket rising upward between turns 1 and 2 over the Sebring front straight walkover bridge.

All in all, it was an action-packed international sports car racing fans dream weekend.  Counting the support races we took in 24 hours of top-class racing, and watching the greatest sport car drivers in the world duel it out across two fantastic endurance races.  Some drivers actually participated in both the WEC 1000 Miles and the 12 Hours of Sebring.   I hear they are talking of doing it again next year.   Super Sebring 2020 indeed!

2019 Super Sebring – Another Winning Porsche Weekend

From David Kelly – Here is a link to photos of the Space Coast Region Tech. Session at Porsche Melbourne on Saturday, March 22, 2019.  It was a good turn-out of Space Coast members and great hospitality from Porsche Melbourne, which included breakfast and a full lunch for everyone, which provided an opportunity to see old friends and meet new ones.

We were able to see and learn firsthand about all the properties of the newest Ceramic coating technology for our cars.  The Feynlab presenter and the Porsche Melbourne technician applying the coating during the demonstration did an excellent job of explaining the entire process and answered all questions about the product and the seven-year warranty that goes with it.  The knowledge and expertise displayed were very impressive, and the results achieved were equally so.  Several SPC members expressed interest in having it applied to their cars.

A bonus to the session was seeing some really nice Porsche cars in the shop and on the showroom floor while having fun and learning something new at the same time.  It was a great event!  I hope you enjoy the photos.

Space Coast Region Tech. Session at Porsche Melbourne – 03/22/19

From David Kelly –The link below will take you to photos of the Vero Beach Kaffeeklatsch on Sunday, March 10, 2019.  It was a beautiful day with a large turnout of Space Coast members and their cars for our monthly Kaffeeklatsch.  There was a broad mix of early and late Porsches on display which caused considerable discussion as everyone checked-out their favorite models.  There were some great stories told too about past and present Porsche adventures which generated plenty of laughs.  One member brought along his new McLaren and it was a big hit with everyone.  A great car!  You’ll find several images of it in the photos.  Also, many thanks to the Space Coast Region members from the Melbourne area who came down to join in the fun.  It made the event even more meaningful for everyone.  I hope you enjoy the photos.

Vero Beach Kaffeeklatsch – Sunday, March 10, 2019

From Robin Hoffman – More and more Space Coasters are joining in the annual WERKS Reunion in Amelia Island! It was a beautiful day enjoyed by all who made the trek! This year 5 of our members were in the Judged Category and many more joined in the 1000 or so Porsches in the corral. Steve Hoffman, Carmen DeVito and Jackson Hall also were judges in the show! James Breeding’s beautiful 1988 Pearl White 911 Turbo took home first place in its class – a wonderful tribute to James’ memory as he was preparing this car with Lou Verdiales before his unfortunate passing.

From Robin Hoffman – The sun was shining and our cars and planes were sparkling for our 3rd Annual Porsches & Planes event! We raised $870 for the Valiant Air – Warbird Museum! Tom Etter and the museum’s volunteer staff took such wonderful care of us. Thank you! And Thank You to Terry Miller for heading up this event again this year and all the PCA volunteers to who helped out to make the event run smoothly!! Hope to do it again next year!

From Robin Hoffman – The autocross season for the Space Coast Region PCA has begun! We had a few sprinkles of rain but everyone was safe, we had a great course and ran 5 runs! Our AX Team does a superb job of setting up the course, running the event and then re-packing everything up in the trailer after the fun… THANK YOU!! We hope everyone had a great time and will return for another event in the 2019 season! Thanks also to Shay Rowe and Porsche Melbourne for sponsoring our Autocross season and to Mark Pieloch, Ed, Jerry and the team who make the American Muscle Car Museum such a great venue!

Photos – SPC Autocross at AMCM, February 9, 2019

From David Kelly – Here is a link to photos of the Vero Beach Kaffeeklatsch on Sunday, February 10, 2019.  There was a good turn-out of Porsche owners and enough time for discussion over coffee and for checking out the cars before the rain came.  It was a good mix of cars, with the red 993 attracting attention from a future Porsche driver.  Several members mentioned that they had registered for the 2019 Porsche Parade in Boca Raton.  Everyone seemed to have a good time despite the weather-shortened event.

There are fewer photos than usual, but hopefully enough to convey what the event was like.  Thanks.

Vero Beach Kaffeeklatsch – Sunday 02/10/19

From David Kelly – Here is a link to photos of the “48 Hours at Sebring” PCA Race on Friday 02/01/19 and on Saturday 02/02/19.  The Sebring race is PCA’s largest race event and that was certainly evident from the very large number of GT3/Cup Cars in the field, and from the equally large group GT4/Club Sport entries on the Grid and on the track.  Everything from a full complement of early water-cooled cars, Spec. Boxsters, and classic 911 race cars up to the latest Porsche track machines were well represented in the action.  You’ll see that in the full Grids and five separate Run Groups as you go through the photos.  There were great cars and great action everywhere you looked!

There was also much to see as you walked through the Paddock.  The details in photos of the garages and the race cars seemed to tell a story all their own.  Look for the rare white ’68 911 race car with some serious drivers and serious race history, or that beautiful white Carrera GT tooling through the Paddock, or check out the fresh #911 Porsche Factory RSR adorning the dining area in the Hall of Legends.  It was a great lunch companion for everyone.  Porsche North America brought two of their fully-equipped car haulers for the race and they were highly visible throughout the event.

The history of sports car racing at Sebring is everywhere, from the Juan Fangio Terrace and Dan Gurney Terrace, to the “Hall of Legends” and the huge “Hall of Fame” listed on the Tower, to the history of winning Marques for each year listed across the face of the Grand Stand at track-side over Pit Road.  Porsche’s racing success at Sebring is a very significant part of that history.

Hopefully, you’ll find something of interest in the photos, and perhaps a feeling of being right there.  Please feel free to download any of the images.

From David Kelly – Here is a link to photos of the Vero Beach Kaffeeklatsch held on Sunday, January 13, 2019.  It was a beautiful day and another big turn-out of SPC members.  Thirty-two attendees brought twenty-nine Porsches to our monthly event.  Someone mentioned that we might need a bigger room at Panera’s in the future.  Many thanks to all who attended, including several of our SPC Region Officers who drove down from Melbourne to share in the fun.  It was a perfect mix of great cars, great stories, and great people!  I hope that you enjoy the photos.
