The Rolex 24 Weekend had something for every Porsche enthusiast. The race resulted in a famous ‘three-peat’ for Roger Penske and Porsche in the prototype class. The PCA-sponsored Porscheplatz and PCA Car Corral was a Porsche lover’s paradise. And the 8th Annual Art of Speed at Daytona One was a great success. From Sue Kee – The No. 7 Porsche Penske 963 defended its two consecutive Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona overall victories with a third time win at the Rolex thanks to driver Felipe Nasr, who achieved their third consecutive overall win, matching historical records. There were 60 entrants in the race.
The two Porsche Penske’s were the class of the field for the majority of the 24-hour race yet again, leading more than three-fourths of the race, but sadly, the No. 6 team ran into problems, with damage from contact in the opening two hours. Fortunately, the No. 7 team Felipe Nasr, Julien Andlauer, and Laurin Henrich completed a flawless way in the hunt of its third consecutive victory. They dominated even with record unprecedented fog for 6-1/2 hours and were very strong this year.
The No. 7 team held the lead at each major milestone of the race, with Felipe Nasr holding off pressure at the end from Cadillac’s Jack Aiken with a difference of 1.5 seconds. It was an exciting race to watch as always. The Rolex never disappoints.
